don't know what did it - but it works now.
I tried to de-activate several extensions, including FABRIK (which made ACCESS levels + Language inaccessible in the Joomla articles???), then I installed Jfilters (for other purposes) which required re-indexing - and then it worked.
But I don't know if that is what did it.
